MICHAEL ARMSTRONG
Paintings From a Recent Past
25 April – 21 June
Michael Armstrong (born 1954) is a New Zealand painter and sculptor. Based in Timaru, he is recognised for his dynamic mixed‑media work that blends figuration, abstraction, vibrant colour and humour. A graduate of the University of Canterbury (1976) and recipient of the 1984 Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, Armstrong has exhibited regularly since 1969 and previously taught at Aoraki Polytechnic (now Ara Institute).

His practice is defined by energetic compositions incorporating cartoon‑like figures, fragmented forms, and bold colour to address social, political, and environmental themes. Working across oil, watercolour, and varied media, Armstrong produces both paintings—including shaped or rough‑edged canvases—and sculptural works. His accolades include a QE2 Arts Council grant and the 1990 CSA Guthrey Travel Award, and his work is represented in major public collections throughout New Zealand.

This exhibition presents a selection of recent canvas paintings that showcase Michael Armstrongs distinctive expressive figures, dynamic linework, and vibrant, energetic use of colour.
