GOLD

Works from the
Permanent Collection

2 April - 15 May 2022

As the name suggests, ‘gold’ is the principal theme of this exhibition. Interpreted in the broadest sense, ‘Gold’ brings to light works that are either framed in gold or that include gold in their subject or surface treatment. The collection comprises gifts from a wide range of donors and supporters, and gives us an opportunity to show the full extent of the Gallery’s holdings. Included are works by Evelyn Page, Trevor Moffitt, Nigel Brown, Petrus van der Velden, Corinna Modigliani, Chrystabel Aitken and Dame Janet Paul.

On the use of gold: “…richly decorating frames, borders and edges fittingly and ingeniously with grotesque masques, Moresque designs and curly ribbons, with gold on all sides, above and below – this is not to be condemned, on the contrary, it is altogether praiseworthy!”

- Karel van Mander (1548-1606)
