AGAINST THE GRAIN

NZ Women Artists From The Collection
6 October - 9 December 2018

As part of Gore District’s Suffrage 125 event calendar we are hosting an exhibition of works by notable women artists from our collection. Several have southern connections, but all are pioneers in their respective fields. Early practitioners certainly defied conventions of the day to become full time career artists and this selection from the Gallery’s permanent collection celebrates their skill and determination.  Featured in this presentation are works by Mabel Hill, Kathleen Salmond and Connie Lloyd, along with works by locally born and Canterbury College of Art trained Chrystabel Aitken. Other southern artists include Ena B Jeans, Alice Lothian, Elizabeth Stevens and Joanna Margaret Paul.
